Wetlands

Wetlands are some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. They filter water, prevent flooding, and provide a home and protection to many kinds of plants and animals. Wetlands are called “Nature’s Pantry” because they provide people with so many useful things including food, medicine, and basketry materials. Native People in the Pacific Northwest have modified wetlands for many generations. Some communities built terraces to create ideal growing conditions for wapato or “Indian potato,” a starchy tuber that is an important native food. When people thin wapato, the remaining plants grow bigger and produce more tubers.
